I’d say the first 1/4th of the book was slow for me. I did enjoy the story once I got into it though. With that said, it was a little weird for me to read a book like this one. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against it, I just haven’t ever read a story with a gay couple. The reason being that I am definitely NOT used to reading a story with LGBT characters. Honestly, I was a little nervous going into this book. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here-it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right. Summary: Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.
